Pentland Hills Regional Park

The Pentland Hills Regional Park is a living, working landscape, which offers great opportunities to experience and enjoy the outdoors. Sculpted by glaciers and water, then shaped by people's interactions over thousands of years, the Pentland Hills are valued by all. With about 10,000 hectares of countryside and over 100km of paths, there is space to escape, relax or be invigorated. Walking, biking and horse-riding as well as fishing, running and orienteering are all enjoyed within the Park. The Regional Park offers both gentle and challenging routes. Paths take you to Pentland summits, through cleughs and glens as well as around reservoirs. Vistas from the higher tops give a panoramic view across the Firth of Forth, the Borders and to Ben Lomond. Low level areas offer quiet, remote places where you are surrounded by the wildness of the Pentlands. Much of the Park is home to a variety of wildlife and important habitats. This rich mosaic of wildlife habitats, open spaces, farmed land and natural beauty is as a result of people having been part of the land for thousands of years. Ancient hill forts and riggs speak of a long established use of the area. The Battle of Rullion Green and the Martyrs Monument tell of a bloodier past. Farming continues throughout the Park as well as military training, reservoirs and conservation management. Visitors are asked to respect the working environment of the Park and make sure they follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. To help you get the most out of your visit, Park Ranger staff are happy to give advice to any queries and concerns you may have.

Play Video

Dalhousie Falconry

Falconry in Scotland at Dalhousie Castle Hotel

Although Falconry is thought to have originated over 4,000 years ago in the Far East, it became popular in Medieval Britain with the Norman Conquest and rapidly changed from being merely a means of providing food for the table to being an elite noble sport. The popularity of Scottish Falconry escalated until the invention of the gun, at which point it began to die out.

Scottish falconry was an essential pastime of the nobility and would have been practiced on horseback within the grounds of Dalhousie Castle. It was common to organise hunting with hawks trips as a way of entertaining important guests, who would frequently bring their own falcons and falconers with them. Most wealthy families would employ their own falconer, and the Ramsays of Dalhousie would most likely have had their own mews and falconer within the grounds.

Play Video

Hunters Coaches

The Family business of William Hunter, was started over 120 years ago in Loanhead, near Edinburgh , using horse-drawn carriages, hauling coal between the various mining villages of Midlothian . Weekends were more glamorous, providing horses and traps for weddings and various outings.

The 1920s saw our first motor vehicles and charabancs.

By the 1950s we were concentrating solely on passenger transport. Today we operate a medium-sized fleet of the most modern coaches available. regularly seen in all corners of the UK and Europe.

In over one hundred and twenty years of business, one thing however has never changed, our excellent, reliable service, and personal attention.

Play Video

Fern Glass

Fern Glass began more than ten years ago from a small workshop in the family home of founding artist June Mackenzie, who originally worked with lead to create stained glass window panels. A hundred years ago such panels were often seen, however in this modern age, due to energy saving double-glazing being employed in most homes, single-glazed leaded panels are no longer practical. With this in mind, June set out to adapt stained glass window ornamentation to the requirements of our age, creating smaller, self-contained glass designs using the Tiffany method of copper-foiling and solder. These pieces were designed to hang in any window to provide the appearance of genuine stained glass without the permanence and impracticalities involved in leaded window panels.

The website will be based on video presentations with voice-overs, music, interactive maps and networking links to other parts of the UK.

Project co-ordinator John Donaldson said: "Midlothian on video is a new concept in business and tourism marketing.

"I think that the success of websites such as You Tube proves that video on the internet has been embraced by the world."

Provost Sam Campbell added: "Tourism is a vital part of Midlothian's new economy.

"In the global marketplace you have to stay ahead of the competition and it's great to see Midlothian first past the post again."

More than 35 businesses have already signed up to the project, which is being backed by Midlothian Council and Midlothian Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise.

The website will be launched at VisitScotland Expo 2007 at Ingliston on April 18.

New Investment for Scotland on Video

iFrame Media Ltd have invested an additional £50,000 in Scotland on Video.

John Donaldson, Managing Director of iFrame Media said, "This is a major investment for iFrame Media and truly believe that Scotland on Video will become the defacto web site for visitors researching their holiday in Scotland".

"Scotland on Video also has major potential for businesses that want to promote their company and products using a video presentation to the world and Scotland on Video is the ideal vehicle for this type of promotion."

"We need people to understand that video is the future of the internet and that websites with text and pictures only have a limited shelf life".
